Attempts to access Windows Update result in “Code 80070424 Windows Update encountered an unknown error”. Running Vista Home Premium SP 2, 64-bit OS.

Looked in the forum for help.

A.        Tried this fix from Debbie:
 
1.    Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel,
and then clicking Administrative Tools.
2.     Double-click Services.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or
 confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.    Right-click the Windows Update service, and then click Stop.
4.     Click start, then click all programs, then click accessories, then right click command prompt and choose to run as administrator.
Type:
 net stop wuauserv  then press enter - OK
 regsvr32 wuapi.dll  then press enter - OK
 regsvr32 wuaueng.dll  then press enter - OK
 regsvr32 wucltux.dll  then press enter - OK
 regsvr32 wudriver.dll  then press enter – “Loaded, but entry point in DllRegisterServer was not found.”
 regsvr32 wups2.dll  then press enter - OK
 regsvr32 wups.dll  then press enter - OK
 regsvr32 wuwebv.dll  then press enter - OK
 net start wuauserv  then press enter - OK
 exit  then press enter
This did not make a repair.
 
B.        Tried this fix from Marilyn:

Copy & paste the below commands in a notepad & save the file
as "Resolution.bat" on your desktop.
Run the file to execute the commands.

And did Resolution Method 1 or Method 3 in

  2. Open Control Panel.

  5. Next, click Change Settings located on the left side panel of the Problem Reports and Solutions window.
  6. Select an option to configure how you want Windows to look for a solution to your problems. You may allow Windows to do it automatically or ask you every time to check if problem occurs.
  7. Next, click the Advanced settings link.
  8. Select Off to turn off Error Reporting.
